The area surrounding Bautzen impresses with its rolling hills, unspoiled nature and tranquil lakes. The romantic half-timbered houses are another highlight. Whether hiking, cycling or pilgrimage - Bautzen invites you to take a relaxing break. The Sorbs, a West Slavic minority, have lived in the region for centuries and maintain their own language and culture. This remains alive to this day and offers guests the opportunity to experience it at first hand.
Ortenburg Castle, situated on a rocky plateau above the River Spree, was once the main fortress of Upper Lusatia. Today it houses the Saxon Higher Administrative Court and the Sorbian Museum. The Old Waterworks, a historic pumping station, and St. Michael's Church are landmarks of the town. The ensemble of waterworks and church is a striking eye-catcher and a popular motif in tourist advertising.
Bautzen, with a population of around 38,000, is the political and cultural center of the Sorbs and is part of the Neisse Euroregion. The city offers a fascinating mix of history, culture and nature.

1,000 years of history with a view to the future! The town of Bautzen in Upper Lusatia is both a Saxon ambassador and a popular tourist destination. Situated in a unique natural landscape, the UNESO World Natural Heritage Site of the Heath and Pond Landscape, it is also the economic engine of Lusatia in eastern Germany. The minority Sorbs have lived here for many centuries, combining culture with tradition. Bautzen is considered one of the most hospitable and family-friendly cities in Germany. With “Saxony in Paris”, Bautzen also wants to showcase the special Franco-German connection. As one of the largest employers in the region, ALSTOM is committed to tradition and at the same time an innovator in mobility. We are proud of that!
