The Rakotz Bridge was built from basalt by the owner of the manor, Herrmann Friedrich Roetschke. It is part of the Rakotz ensemble, which, in addition to the bridge, also includes a grotto, the basalt organ in the lake and the Little White Water with a small Devil's Bridge. The bridge, which has a length of 19.8 meters, was extensively renovated from 2018 to 2021 and is now accessible to visitors again.
Kromlau Park, inspired by the neighboring Muskau Park, was designed by Roetschke from 1844. He had ponds dug, hills raised and rare trees and shrubs planted. The basalt columns in the lake, popularly known as the “basalt church”, are particularly impressive. Other architectural highlights include the open staircase with relief reliefs and the replica of Hercules Farnese.
The Rakotzbrücke bridge is not only a popular photo motif, but also an important monument to romantic garden architecture. It attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year, far more than the 300 inhabitants of the small village of Kromlau. The bridge has also been used as a backdrop in films such as “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” and “Matrix Resurrections” as well as in the video game “Spiritfarer”.
The mystical backdrop of the Rakotzbrücke and its impressive construction make it one of the most beautiful sights in Saxony and one of the most visited places in the region.
