With Nora Schmid's directorship, which began in 2024, the Semperoper is opening a new chapter in its 350-year history. This goes back to the first German opera “Dafne” by Heinrich Schütz, which premiered in 1627. Important personalities such as Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss had a decisive influence on the history of the Semperoper. Wagner premiered his works “Rienzi”, “The Flying Dutchman” and “Tannhäuser” here, while Strauss shone with “Salome”, ‘Elektra’ and “Der Rosenkavalier”.
The Semperoper Ballett, which was founded in 1825, has been directed by Kinsun Chan since the 2024/25 season. The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, founded in 1548, welcomed Daniele Gatti as its new chief conductor in 2024. The Saxon State Opera Choir, founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817, has been under the direction of Jan Hoffmann since the 2024/25 season.
A special highlight is the Semper Opera Ball, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in February 2025. This unique event combines elegant ball events with performances by the opera's female artists and attracts thousands of visitors who waltz in front of the opera and enjoy the festive atmosphere. The Semperoper Dresden remains a place where past and present are in harmony and the magic of music can be felt in every performance.
