Herrnhut stars: Craftsmanship of world renown

Herrnhut, located in the heart of picturesque Upper Lusatia, is a town with an eventful history. Founded in 1722 by descendants of the Old Brethren Unity, the town has literally been “under the Lord's watchful eye” ever since. As the place of origin of the worldwide Unity of Brethren, Herrnhut is still a living legacy today.

Created over 180 years ago in the bosom of the Moravian Church, the Moravian star is regarded as the origin of all Christmas stars and is a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem. As early as the 19th century, the star not only lit up the rooms in the boarding school rooms of the Moravian Church, but also the hearts of the children. Conceived by a teacher in mathematics lessons, it was used to teach a better understanding of geometry. From then on, the children always made their stars on the first Sunday in Advent, decorated their rooms and carried the custom into their families.

The businessman P. H. Verbeek invented the first collapsible Herrnhut star at the end of the 19th century. What was new about this star was its openwork metal body with rails onto which the paper points with metal frames could be slid. In 1894/95, he had the current headquarters of Herrnhuter Sterne GmbH built, where the first Herrnhuter Sterne were offered for sale from 1897. In the following years, Verbeek continued to develop the design and in 1925 applied for a patent for the first disembodied star. This model corresponds to the design used today - always with 17 square and 8 triangular points.
At the same time, he founded the “Stern-Gesellschaft mbH Herrnhut” in 1925. This marks the beginning of the eventful history of today's Herrnhuter Sterne GmbH, which extends from its nationalization in 1950 and reassignment in 1968 to its re-establishment in 1991.
To this day, the traditional company stands for the literal meaning of the word >>manufactory<< and so hard-working hands fold and glue the approximately 820,000 Herrnhut stars every year - always with the predicate - handmade from Herrnhut.
